Introduction to HTML

HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is the backbone of every webpage on the internet. It provides the structure and content of a webpage, defining elements that browsers use to interpret and display information.

What is HTML?

HTML is a markup language composed of various elements, tags, and attributes. These elements help organize content on a webpage, creating headings, paragraphs, lists, links, images, and more. The structure of HTML consists of nested elements, forming a tree-like structure known as the Document Object Model (DOM).

Basic Structure of HTML

An HTML document starts with a <!DOCTYPE html> declaration, followed by an <html> element that wraps the entire content. Within the <html> element, there are two main sections:

  • Head Section (<head>): Contains meta-information about the document, such as the title of the page, links to external stylesheets, and scripts.
  • Body Section (<body>): Contains the visible content of the webpage.

HTML Elements

Elements are the building blocks of HTML and consist of a start tag, content, and an end tag. Some elements, like line breaks or images, are self-closing (only have a start tag).

  • Tags: Enclosed in angle brackets, such as <tagname>. Examples include <p> for paragraphs, <h1> to <h6> for headings, <a> for links, etc.
  • Attributes: Provide additional information about an element and are placed within the opening tag. Attributes have a name and a value. For example, the href attribute specifies the link's destination in an anchor (<a>) tag.
